Iraq and Afghanistan vet Brandon Friedman at has a fantastic piece up at The Huffington Post about how if McCain is going to claim that his injuries at the hands of his captors are the cause of his computer illiteracy, he should release his medical records so the voters can see precisely how it has done so:

Personally, I have no interest in poring over John McCain’s medical records. If a medical doctor says he’s as good to go as any other 72-year-old, then I’m fine with that. And I certainly have no interest in forcing McCain to publicly disclose the exact nature of the injuries he sustained in Vietnam at the hands of his captors.

But when John McCain’s surrogates deploy the POW defense as a countermeasure against a political charge — specifically, the seemingly unrelated charge that John McCain is “out of touch” and technologically inept — then all of a sudden I’m interested in the precise nature of John McCain’s injuries and medical history.

Because, see, by bringing this up, they’ve opened the door, not the Obama campaign. If John McCain is going to play the “I-don’t-know-how-to-email-because-I-was-a-POW-in-Vietnam-card,” then he or his campaign needs to describe to America the nature of those injuries. They shouldn’t be kept secret. That way we can all work on the same level playing field. The Obama campaign would know clearly what lines they could or could not cross.

  1. McCain plays the POW card on almost everything. He’s repeatedly used it as the reason he can’t be criticized or even scrutinized. His absurd 3 hour time limit for a select number of reporters with no phones, copies or computers available to examine over 1000 pages of medical records, was a sham.

Max, your position, “If a medical doctor says he’s as good to go as any other 72-year-old…” begs the question, what is “good to go” for a 72 year old? Keep in mind, this 72 year old man with heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergies, arthritis, and a 3 time survivor of cancer is expected to have 12 to 20 hour work days without official days off and on-call 24 hours a day for the next four years. The disease and illness that comes with age is not only normal, it’s virtually impossible to escape. Ask anyone over 70.

It is unrealistic to expect a high level of performance, most especially at this precarious time in our country’s history, from a 72 year old man . The chances of McCain’s cancer recurring is about 70% and climbing everyday. If indeed it does recur, the medical treatment alone would render him incapable of acting as president and the 25th amendment would kick in making Sarah “I don’t know what the Bush Doctrine is” Palin the Commander in Chief during a time of war, a ludicrous proposition at best.

Thank you for your post and I agree that McCain needs to release his entire medical record for the scrutiny that it — and the American people deserve.
