McCain on Reenacting the Draft: “I Don’t Disagree”

Today at a townhall meeting, a McCain supporter suggested reenacting the draft. Sen. McCain’s response? “I don’t disagree.”

QUESTIONER: If we don’t reenact the draft, I don’t think we’ll have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell.

[Appaluse]

MCCAIN: Ma’am, let me say that I don’t disagree with anything you said.

Watch it here:

This isn’t the first time McCain has stated that he might consider a draft. Last September, he said that if there was a draft where everyone equally served, he might consider it.

Indeed, the woman asking McCain the question is correct. There are no troops left to follow Bin Laden to the gates of Hell — but don’t ask us, ask the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen:

We are exploring a number of options and opportunities to get a better understanding of the scope of the threat and the best means with which to counter it. I’ve made no secret of my desire to flow more forces, U.S. forces, to Afghanistan just as soon as I can, nor have I been shy about saying that those forces will not be available unless or until the situation in Iraq permits us to do so.

It’s nice to at least see Sen. McCain being honest here. If he wants to add troops in Afghanistan and indeed follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell, but also wants to stay in Iraq for as long as it takes to achieve his shapeless, undefined concept of victory, the troops will have to come from somewhere — and that somewhere just might be a draft.

  1. You are real vets?
I do not see how any real vet could support Obama.

  2. Kerry Hales says:

I don’t see why you bothered to post. You are simply a troll. Any vet that knows McCain knows that his record for vets is atrocious. Go look at his record, you will see. Otherwise, just go away. My three battle tours are enough for me to sign here for Obama.

  3. Kevin Smith says:

I am a veteran who served willingly, but did not fight. I still remember the service with pride and good memories. I served out a genuine desire to given back to the society in which I lived.

John McCain does indeed cheapen and devalue all veterans’ experiences by invoking it trivially. From the way McCain appears, the results of his captivity weren’t trivial.

I support Obama and I AM A REAL VET, YOU DIMWITTED, INTELLECTUALLY UNDEREMPLOYED “CITIZEN” WELLS!

  4. Kevin Smith says:

I’m sorry for the typo errors. It should read “I served out of a genuine desire to give back to the society in which I lived.”

And “Citizen Wells” is still a fool.

  5. Tim Bagwell says:

Look at McCain’s record on voting for Veteran’s rights and its easy to why vets would not vote for him. Here’s a link from the DAV on his record http://dav.capwiz.com/bio/id/192. I’m not saying McCain isn’t a good man but his record speaks for itself. As a fellow veteran I have nothing but respect for someone who had to go through the hell he did. As a veteran I expect my public officials to support the needs of veterans whenever possible. McCain needs to work on this issue.

  6. What has McCain done for veterans? I support Senator Obama. I don’t support military action as the solution of choice to conflicts and problems around the world. No less than
President and General Dwight D Eisenhower worned of using the military industrial complex
to solve world problems as have many current day generals. You want to really energize todays youth, go ahead, reenact the draft.

  7. Tom Wetzler says:

yes, I’m a real veteran. I served with an Infantry company in VietNam. Sounds like you don’t see much of anything. How Come?

  8. Richard Pagoria says:

Why would you be able to see how a vet could support Obama - that would the ability to think compound thoughts? The staunchest Republican only support the military until they have served in a war zone. After that, they are on their own. How many times did the Republicans, including John, try to block expanded services to vets, including those with permanent disabilities? After the Dems got through the legislation with a veto proof majority, Bush signed the bill with John standing next to him. Now that’s dishonesty personified.

  9. And why is that, Citizen Wells? Also, how about an explaination of the difference between a “real vet”, and someone who (in your opinion) is a not-real vet.

  10. Mary Schott Wold USAFR, Captain, honorably discharged says:

How can you not support Obama?
McCain will privatize all Military medical care.
McCain will privatize Social Security and then the Military Pension system
    McCain will privatize Medicare eventually.
And then raise Social Security Payroll taxes so that he can give more tax breaks to the wealthy. We have had 150 billion in surplus Payroll taxes that already funded the tax cuts that Bush gave to the wealthy..

Even Warren Buffett admits we have the most regressive tax policies in this country of any developed country…His secretaries are paying twice the rate of taxes that he is…

I don’t know what Obama will do first, but anything would be better than McCain/Bush…

  11. A real veteran understands that doing your duty, and believing in policy are two different things. Apparent Colin Powell, who resigned from this administration because if its policies, isn’t a real veteran to you either.

  12. Charles Beard, USM, Retired says:

And I guess that we are to believe that the person who put this post (I do not see how any real vet could support Obama) is a REAL VET. What Senator Obama has supported for VET so far - has had a much great impact on the life of veterans than what McCain has accomplished in 30 years. If you want to see the breath and depth of McCains support of Veterans - go on the WEB and locate his non-support of the families of MIA. His nasty attitude towards the wife of a MIA says it all.

  13. Dennis Hurt says:

What vetrans bill has Mcain supported. None lately DAV only a 20% rating

  14. Under “Compelled Community Service” by Obama

“Expand to Meet Military Needs on the Ground: A major stress on our troops comes from insufficient ground
forces. Barack Obama supports plans to increase the size of the Army by 65,000 troops and the Marines by
27,000 troops. Increasing our end strength will help units retrain and re-equip properly between deployments
and decrease the strain on military families.”

Sounds like a draft to me. Especially since it’s under the banner of COMPELLED service.

  15. I am a current active duty Marine, and I support McCain, but I dont understand why when people support one side they are treated like crap by the other side.
